Frequently Asked Questions about our free Homeschool Music Theory

Below, you'll find the answers to many of the common questions that we get regarding our Homeschool Music Theory Classes. If you still have questions, just email us or call and we'll be happy to help.

What Level Should I Register For?

Our music theory program is broken down into 6 levels. The levels are 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B, 3A, & 3B. I have developed a simple online level assessment that you should have your student or child take to help determine which level they are supposed to take. The level assessment is very important. Please read all directions carefully and let me know if you have any questions about placement. Placement in the wrong class can have a negative impact on your child's learning as well as other students in the class. Starting at the beginning is never a bad idea, even for students with musical experience because it ensures that they don't miss any important details that will allow them to successfully navigate the higher levels.

What costs should I expect for this class?

Keep your money. We are offering this class tuition free! The only costs associated with it will be the course materials. Students will need a workbook for this class. A basic workbook without the accompanying ear training CD can be purchased right at Brickhouse Music on the first day of class for $6.50 plus tax. The book is titled "Alfred's Essentials of Music Theory" and Book 1 will cover levels 1A and 1B. Book 2 will cover levels 2A and 2B. Book 3 covers 3A and 3B.  We usually go over the ear training CD in class, but it is helpful to have the CD for additional ear training and we carry the CD for an additional $10 and the CD covers book 1 & 2 or book 3 depending on which level you need. There is also a "complete" book that contains all 3 books with no CDs for $12.99 if you think you intend to do all three levels. There is also a "complete" version with both CD's (so you get all the books and all the ear training for all 6 of our classes) for $31.50. I personally think that's the best way to go but I also like that you can take the class and have all the materials you need for only $6.50!

How are students assessed?

After the 1st week of class, there are short 10-minute quizzes each week and the students' final grade will be an average of all quiz grades. It is recommended that students earn a minimum of 80% in class before moving on to the next level to ensure comprehension of the material.

Do we meet every week?

Generally, yes. We will meet every week for the duration of the class. Even if the main teacher for the class is unavailable due to illness or other circumstances we still have a class with a substitute teacher.
